Planning family photos around your toddler's bedtime doesn't have to be stressful. Here's how to get great light without throwing off your evening routine.

If you've ever thought:

"Our toddler goes to bed at 7 PM. Will sunset family photos be too late?"

You're not alone. I get this question all the time from families visiting Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, Oak Island, and other North Carolina beaches.

The good news is that a 7 PM bedtime often works surprisingly well.

Why Sunset in September Is Usually the Best Time

About an hour before sunset, the light becomes softer and more flattering. It helps reduce harsh shadows, keeps everyone from squinting, and gives your photos a warm, natural look.

During September, for example, sunset along the North Carolina coast is usually between 7:00 PM and 7:30 PM. That means a session starting around 5:45 PM to 6:00 PM gives us plenty of time before your child's bedtime.

What If My Toddler Gets Tired?

Honestly, that's okay.

I've photographed plenty of families with babies and toddlers, and I've learned that the best photos don't happen because kids stand perfectly still.

They happen when they're:

  • Walking along the shoreline.
  • Looking for seashells.
  • Holding Mom or Dad's hand.
  • Laughing after being tossed into the air.
  • Watching the waves.

Even if your little one gets sleepy near the end of the session, we'll already have the important family portraits finished.

Tips Before Your Session

To help everyone have a great experience:

  • Let your child nap if possible.
  • Bring a favorite snack and water.
  • Pack a small towel and an extra outfit.
  • Don't worry if someone gets sandy or wet. Kids usually have the most fun once they stop worrying about staying clean.

What Happens During the Session?

A typical one hour family session includes:

  • Full family portraits.
  • Parents with the kids.
  • Siblings together.
  • Individual photos of each child.
  • Grandparents, if they're joining.
  • Candid moments playing on the beach.
  • Walking along the shoreline.
  • Looking for shells.
  • Lots of natural interaction.

There's no pressure to smile at the camera the entire time. Some of my favorite images happen between the posed photos.

What If Sunset Is After Bedtime?

Not every month is the same.

During the summer, sunset can be after 8 PM, which may be too late for some young children.

In that case, we can:

  • Start a little earlier.
  • Choose a sunrise session.
  • Schedule during another season when sunset is earlier.

We'll choose the option that works best for your family.

FAQ

Should I skip family photos if my toddler goes to bed at 7 PM?

Not at all. During much of the year, especially in September, sunset sessions fit very well with a 7 PM bedtime.

Can babies be part of a sunset session?

Absolutely. Babies often do great during the hour before sunset, especially after a good nap.

What if my child cries?

That's completely normal. We take breaks, let them explore, and keep the session fun. Some of the best photos happen after those little moments.
